Shadwell is an ancient village, mentioned in the Doomsday Book as Scadewelle, but archaeological remains of Roman settlements surrounding the area suggest a long presence of settlement in the local area. We have a vigorous Historical Society to preserve and enhance the village context and archives. See the links below for more information.

Shadwell village is situated on the northern outskirts of Leeds. We enjoy the benefits of proximity to the city together with easy access to the wonderful countryside of Wharfedale and the nearby Yorkshire Dales, with the North York Moors and Peak District not too far away.

Although we are only about five miles from Leeds City Centre the village retains a rural feel, being surrounded by parkland and farmland which form a green barrier between us and the rest of the city. This gives a strong and well defined sense of belonging, and Shadwell in Bloom is pleased to be part of the village community.
